Heirloom SIBERIAN KALE -- 2000 SEEDS

Non GMO, Non Hybrid, Open Pollinated

Brassica napus

60 DAYS. Extremely hardy, huge blue green slightly curled feather shaped leaves, non heading 18"-36" tall plants. These kales are typically more tender and have a milder flavor than the European "oleracea" kales and are therefore the young leaves are better for salad use. Great for freezing!  Kales are always superb as a cooked vegetable when the leaves have grown to full size. Fantastic flavor that is enhanced by frost! A rich source of vitamins & minerals.

Can overwinter if well established giving greens for many months.

Kale grows best in cool weather. Will perform much better with rich, well draining fertile soil. High summer temperatures reduce kales ability to grow and produces bitter leaves.

Napus kales are super hardy winter survivalists. They are hardy to at least 10°F (-12°C) once established and some sources claim them to be hardy to -10°F (-23°C) and maybe -20°F (-29°C). Survival at these extra low temperatures may require a good mulch and/or snow cover. There are many factors known and unknown that can effect winter hardiness and there can be no real guarantee for how cold a crop can go. Wind can be an important factor in killing plants and a pattern of freeze thaw can also be detrimental. They perform best in cool weather but many varieties of napus kales tolerate hot weather. It is widely known that the flavor of Siberian kale sweetens dramatically after first frost. It can be grown anywhere in the US and even in Alaska.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE: Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, and reasonably rich in calcium. Kale, as with broccoli and other brassicas, contains sulforaphane (particularly when chopped or minced), a chemical with potent anti-cancer properties. Boiling decreases the level of sulforaphane; however, steaming, microwaving, or stir frying do not result in significant loss. Along with other brassica vegetables, Kale is also a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells. Kale is also a good source of carotenoids.
